What is a UDI?
A Unique Device Identifier is a unique numeric or alphanumeric code, which consists of two parts:
1. Device Identifier (DI) - a mandatory, fixed portion that identifies the labeler and the specific version or model of a device.
2. Production Identifier (PI) - a conditional, variable portion of a UDI. This information is maintained by the manufacturer for internal operations. A PI can identify one or more of the following pieces of data:
- Lot or batch number within which a specific device was manufactured.
- Serial number of a specific device.
- Expiration date of a specific device.
- Date a specific device was manufactured.
Why is it important?
In 2013, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a final rule establishing a unique device identification system designed to adequately identify devices through distribution and use. The final rule requires device labelers to include a unique device identifier (UDI) on device labels and packages, except where the rule provides for an exception or alternative. Each UDI must be provided in a plain-text version and in a form that uses automatic identification and data capture (AIDC) technology.
Meeting compliance requirements for the FDA Unique Device Identification (UDI) rule is priority-one for today’s medical device manufacturers and labelers. With compliance dates on the horizon for new classes of devices, businesses must be proactive in ensuring standardized product serialization and update their labeling procedures at a rapid pace, or forfeit the right to participate legally in the marketplace. The LVS-9580® is a high performance handheld solution for off-line bar code verification to ISO/IEC standards. Featuring a high resolution 5.0 megapixel camera, the LVS-9580 reads and analyzes 1D and 2D codes up to 3.0 inches wide and up to 2.25 inches tall. The LVS-9580 verifies multiple bar code types, including any combination of Linear, Matrix (Data Matrix, QR Code, and Aztec Code), and Stacked Linear (PDF 417, Micro PDF and Composite Codes). The LVS-9580 verifies bar code labels located on a wide range of surfaces including corrugated cardboard boxes, shipping containers, and metal surfaces.
